We are situated on the
North East side of Winchester. The group was established
in 1921 originally closer to the city than at present,
but still on the North East edge. Most of our members
come from the Hyde district of the city and of course
from the local Winnall area. Everyone
is welcome, we have no boundaries.
Read on to see what we have to offer!
Our H.Q. was built approximately 15 years ago and
comprises of a large activity hall and a small upstairs
room that houses our extensive scouting archives.
We
have a well-equipped kitchen and our toilet facility
has wheelchair access.
We are proud of our association with the Royal
Greenjackets Regiment who
once had their barracks in the city also The Kings
Royal Rifles. These associations came after our
group sent food parcels to prisoners of war captured
at Calais while making a diversion for the Dunkirk
landings. Our parcels were some of the few that
actually found their way to the prisoners, many
others didn’t. In recognition of our services
we were allowed to wear their regimental colours
red/black and green, these were incorporated into
our neckerchief. The regimental badge has also been
incorporated into our own group badge that is worn
on the neckerchief.
All the sections (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) are
active within our group.
We have a large lively colony of Beavers who do
their best to get the ‘out’
out of scouting by trying new activities, having
themed sleepovers, going on visits and taking part
in district events that encourage youngsters to
meet new people,
meet up with old friends and of course have plenty
of fun in the process.
The Cub Pack is a large lively pack with three
leaders that take part in a variety of activities.
They are also very supportive of district events
encouraging the youngsters to take part and have
fun.
The Scout Troop is a small but expanding lively
troop with three leaders.
Our troop takes pride in encouraging traditional
scouting craft and last year won the Antler Night
Hike Trophy with the youngest team
members in the competition!
All sections accept
boys and girls, and incorporate
traditional scouting
skills
with modern ideas
to give a balanced programme that allows young people
to
gain new abilities,
take part in more challenging
activities,
make friends and
have fun.
Our leaders have a wealth of experience in scouting,
hold camping certificates, first aid certificates,
MIDAS certificates (trained minibus drivers) and
we are able to hold our own Beaver
Sleepovers for the Colony.
We hold an annual joint summer
camp for Cubs and Scouts, visiting
different parts of the country including Eire and
Guernsey. We try to incorporate different
activities such as climbing,
caving, canoeing, hill walking and
hiking
into the programme while we are away to make it
a more challenging
experience for everyone. The scouts
also hold a traditional Christmas Camp, where they
invite guests to a three-course meal cooked over
a traditional campfire and in a mud oven, delicious!
Various weekend camps
are held throughout the year, these may be combined
camps or single section camps.
We try our best to have days were all three sections
can join together and have fun, we encourage tolerance
between the age groups and have found that scouts
have a great deal of patience when helping Beavers
with a pioneering project,
proving that we are one
big family.
Why not come and see what we have to offer.
